Dr. Mushoriwa holds multiple advanced degrees that support his expertise in agricultural science. He earned his PhD in Plant Breeding and Genetics from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (2011-2014), where his research focused on breeding gains and inheritance studies for soybean. Prior to that, he completed a Master of Science in Plant Breeding & Agronomy at the University of Zimbabwe (2006-2007), followed by an MBA (2008-2010). He also holds a BSc in Agricultural Management from the Zimbabwe Open University (2001-2004). Additionally, he gained a diploma in agriculture from Gwebi Agricultural College (1991-1993).

Dr. Mushoriwa’s career has spanned several esteemed institutions across Africa. His professional journey began in 1993 at Zimbabwe’s Crop Breeding Institute, where he made substantial contributions to the release and registration of four soybean varieties. In 2003, he moved to Seed Co Research & Development, where he focused on developing competitive soybean varieties for Southern Africa. His leadership role at Pannar Seed in South Africa from 2007 to 2015 further showcased his ability to drive soybean breeding programs across several African countries. He returned to Seed Co as Lead Scientist for Soybean Breeding in 2015, where he played a pivotal role in the commercialization of his varieties, contributing to improved food and nutrition security across Sub-Saharan Africa. Dr. Mushoriwa’s work at ICRISAT as Regional Breeding Theme Lead and currently at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) as Head of Breeding demonstrates his continuous leadership in optimizing breeding strategies and delivering farmer-preferred varieties.
